What’s up in Madeira this September?
I bet you’re here because you plan to spend autumn on the Island of the Eternal spring! That sounds awesome. What’s up in Madeira this September? This is a logical question, so here are some events for September 2015 that will hopefully give the answer to that question.
September is in fact one of the best months to travel to Madeira Island. That is because the weather is warm, but not too hot, the infusion of people is less intimidating and the prices for services such as Madeira transfers or Funchal car hire are lower.
Also, September is a time to celebrate on the island! From the 4th to the 5th of September, Madeira celebrates the Festa do Senhor Bom Jesus in Ponta Delgada. This religious pilgrimage is one of the most popular on the island, transforming it into a lively place of tradition and festivity, with food and drink and music.
Later on this month, you are invited to the Columbus Festival in Porto Santo. From September 17th until the 19th, the island celebrates the golden age of Portuguese Discoveries and their famous navigator, Christopher Columbus. The explorer first alighted in Madeira in 1478, but later on his ties to the island would become even stronger, as a result of his marriage to Filipa Moniz, the daughter of the captain of Porto Santo. Their first son, Diogo, was born here, as the couple spent a few years on the island.
At the Columbus Festival, you are invited to visit exhibitions, to attend concerts and parades and get into the party atmosphere. The peak of the festival is the re-enactment of the moment Christopher Columbus reached the harbor of Porto Santo.
We hope we have convinced you of the great advantages of visiting Madeira Island this September.
Later on, we’ll explore more events!
