The best events to go to in Madeira in March 2017
Can you believe that spring is almost here? I for one can find it hard to believe, especially after so much cold and winter and snow… I do feel like a change of air (and by “air” I literally mean “temperature” and “atmosphere”) is sorely needed. And where better to spend the first days of spring than on the Island of the Eternal Spring. That’s right, we come online today for the (pretty much only) purpose of figuring out the best events to go to in Madeira in March 2017.
The Madeira Carnival is actually one of the most prominent events in the country. Inspired by the old European tradition and the more recent Brazilian street parties in Sao Paulo, the Madeira Carnival brings color and music, dance and joy to the winding cobblestone streets of the island every year. It marks the passing of time and the transition from the cold to the bright, warm season. And Madeirans do it properly: they organize a tremendous party, a fabulous experience for all those involved.
The Madeira Carnival is an ongoing event, due to last until the first days of March, when we wave goodbye not only to the noisy parades, but also to the cold days of winter.
Later on in March, you are also invited to attend the Festa da Anona (Cherimoya Fruit Festival) in Faial, Santana. The event is meant to celebrate the fruit crops and promises a lot of fun. In Santana, you can visit the beautiful traditional, unique houses. They are part of the UNESCO World Heritage.
And if you are wondering what the best way to get around the island is, you basically have three options:
- Use the not so very comfortable public transport system;
- Get your own car for the vacation from Funchal car rental;
- Benefit from both a car and a driver at your service with Madeira transfers.
