From mid-April into late May, Madeira enters one of its most vibrant and visually striking periods of the year. Spring 2026 brings together mild Atlantic weather, blooming landscapes, and a dynamic calendar of festivals that unfold across Funchal and the surrounding island. Unlike the peak summer months, this period offers a more relaxed atmosphere, where visitors can experience Madeira’s traditions, gastronomy, and culture at a comfortable pace.

1. Madeira Rum Festival in Funchal – 14 to 18 April 2026
The post-Easter season begins with one of Madeira’s most distinctive cultural events. Between 14 and 18 April 2026, Funchal hosts the Madeira Rum Festival, celebrating the island’s long-standing sugarcane and distillation heritage.
Set along the seafront promenade, the event brings together local producers who showcase traditional agricultural rum through tastings, workshops, and live demonstrations. Visitors can explore the evolution of rum production on the island while enjoying a lively atmosphere enhanced by music and regional cuisine. This festival offers an authentic introduction to Madeira’s identity, rooted in centuries of agricultural tradition.

2. Viva Cidade Festival – 16 to 18 April 2026
Running concurrently with the rum celebrations, the Viva Cidade Festival adds a contemporary cultural layer to Funchal. Taking place from 16 to 18 April 2026, the event transforms various parts of the city into open-air stages.
Concerts, street performances, and artistic installations create a dynamic urban environment that contrasts with Madeira’s more traditional festivals. The event attracts a diverse audience and provides visitors with an opportunity to experience the island’s modern creative scene alongside its historic charm.

3. EXPOTROPICAL – 23 to 26 April 2026
Between 23 and 26 April 2026, Madeira’s capital hosts EXPOTROPICAL, an event dedicated to gastronomy, local products, and regional innovation.
This exhibition highlights the island’s agricultural richness, featuring tropical fruits, regional delicacies, and culinary presentations. Visitors can engage with producers, discover local flavors, and gain insight into Madeira’s evolving food culture. The event also serves as a meeting point for businesses and visitors, combining leisure with a broader cultural and economic perspective.

4. Madeira Flower Festival – 30 April to 24 May 2026
The highlight of Madeira’s spring calendar is the internationally renowned Flower Festival, running from 30 April to 24 May 2026. During this period, Funchal and other parts of the island are transformed into elaborate floral displays, reflecting the abundance of spring.
Key moments include the Allegorical Flower Parade, where decorated floats move through the city accompanied by performers in vibrant costumes, and the symbolic Wall of Hope ceremony, which emphasizes themes of peace and renewal. Streets are adorned with intricate flower carpets, while concerts and cultural performances take place throughout the city.
This festival represents the essence of Madeira in spring, combining natural beauty with artistic expression and community participation.

5. Madeira Classic Car Revival – May 2026
Integrated into the Flower Festival program, the Madeira Classic Car Revival takes place in May 2026, adding a unique historical dimension to the celebrations.
Vintage vehicles are displayed and paraded through Funchal, often decorated with floral arrangements that align with the broader festival theme. The event blends elegance, nostalgia, and creativity, offering visitors a distinctive visual experience that complements the island’s seasonal festivities.

As events are spread across Funchal and extend to different parts of the island, transportation plays an important role in ensuring a smooth visit. For a convenient and reliable experience, travelers can arrange airport transfers in advance via Madeira Airport Transfers or explore the island at their own pace with a rental from Funchal Car Hire for high quality services and unforgettable moments!

Forget the guidebooks for a moment. Madeira’s famous viewpoints and lush gardens are breathtaking, but beyond the postcard scenes lies another island entirely — one of quiet cliffs, mossy trails, and secret coves that the crowds never find. Come November, when the cruise ships have drifted away and the air turns soft and cool, Madeira belongs once again to the explorers. This is the time to wander slowly, to follow winding roads into the mist, and to discover the island’s hidden soul.

1. Furnas do Cavalum — Into the Lava Heart
High in the hills above Machico, a narrow track leads to the Furnas do Cavalum, a network of lava tubes formed when Madeira itself was still being born from fire. The world grows darker and cooler as you step inside, your light flickering across walls that glisten with moisture like veins of crystal. Every drip of water echoes softly through the tunnels. It feels alive — as though you’ve stepped into the island’s beating heart. Few visitors ever come here, and that’s what makes it so special.

2. Boca dos Namorados — The Lovers’ Heights
Above the deep bowl of Curral das Freiras, the tiny viewpoint of Boca dos Namorados feels like a secret balcony hanging between heaven and earth. The wind carries the scent of pine and wild herbs, and the mountains fold into one another in endless shades of green. Locals call it the Lovers’ Mouth, and it’s easy to see why — it’s quiet, intimate, and breathtakingly romantic. At sunset, the valley glows in shades of violet and gold, and all the world feels far away.

3. Achadas da Cruz — Down the Edge of the World
On Madeira’s wild northwest coast, cliffs drop straight into the Atlantic. From the village of Achadas da Cruz, a tiny cable car slides down the cliff face to the Fajã da Quebrada Nova, a sliver of land between mountain and sea. Down below, abandoned stone cottages stand among old vineyards, and waves crash against the black shore. The silence here is immense, broken only by the sea breeze and the cry of seabirds. As you ride the cable car back up, the view opens like a painting — endless blue ocean, the island’s spine rising behind you, and the sense that you’ve just glimpsed the edge of the world.

4. Calhau da Lapa — The Hidden Beach of Dreams
Near Campanário, a steep trail winds down through cliffs and fig trees to reach Calhau da Lapa, one of Madeira’s best-kept secrets. The descent is demanding, but at the bottom, you find a small cove of polished basalt stones and crystal-clear turquoise water. The cliffs above are dotted with fishermen’s caves carved by hand generations ago. Down here, the world feels timeless — the sea whispering against the rocks, sunlight glittering on the water, and not another soul in sight. It’s a place to breathe, to float, to forget the clock entirely.

5. Ribeira da Janela — Where the Sea Stands Still
On the north coast, just east of Porto da Moniz, the black beach of Ribeira da Janela stretches toward three jagged sea stacks that rise like ancient guardians. The Atlantic crashes against them in endless rhythm, and the air is rich with salt and wind. When the sun dips low, the rocks blaze orange and the sea becomes liquid silver. It’s wild, cinematic, and completely untamed — a place that humbles you and fills you with awe all at once.

November might just be the island’s finest month. The days are long enough for adventure, the air hovers around a comfortable twenty degrees, and the levada trails shimmer after the rains. The light turns golden, the hills smell of wet laurel and eucalyptus, and the roads are blissfully quiet. This is when Madeira breathes deeply, and when travelers who crave authenticity will find their paradise.
To truly experience the island’s secret corners, you’ll want the freedom to explore at your own pace. Driving through Madeira is an adventure in itself — tunnels opening into sweeping sea views, hairpin turns revealing quiet villages clinging to the hillsides. Funchal Car Hire makes it easy to rent a car right at the airport or in the city, giving you the keys to the island’s hidden roads. And if you’d rather sit back and let the scenery roll by, Madeira Transfers offers smooth, reliable rides to and from any corner of the island, so you can simply relax and watch the mountains unfold.

1. Monte Toboggan
The Madeira Botanical Garden has a view of Funchal. When you’re done exploring these gardens, you don’t have to go down the stairs by yourself. In its stead, you may experience the Monte Toboggan Run.
Nobility have been using this kind of transportation extensively since the mid-1800s. At the top, you’ll find a wicker basket with two seats that slides down the mountain on wooden runners.
The basket will be pushed and directed by two guys dressed in the traditional all-white outfit, complete with a straw hat and rubber shoes that act as brakes!

2. The caves of Sao Vicente
The Sao Vicente Caves were created by a volcanic explosion around 890,000 years ago. The inside of the lava flow took longer to cool than the exterior. Numerous lava tubes were produced as a result, and since the 1990s, several of these have been accessible to the public.
Walking through these amazing underground caves and seeing the Volcano Center are included in the ticket charge. This excellent set of displays explains more about the geological formation of Madeira’s amazing terrain and volcanic activity.

3. The natural pools of Porto Moniz
Located near the island’s northwest tip lies Porto Moniz, a popular location for its delicious honey and sugar cane cake. You should explore the area’s natural pools in addition to the bakeries.
The water in these naturally occurring swimming pools comes from the sea and was created by the cooling of volcanic lava. Since the pool’s salt water is constantly changing, you’re swimming in brand-new water. You can utilize the facilities, which include showers and lockers, even though the pools are natural.

4. Pico Ruivo
Pico Ruivo is Madeira’s tallest peak, rising to a height of 1862 meters. It is accessible on foot by following a designated trail. There are two options: the easiest to get to takes two hours, while the more difficult one takes four to six hours.
Once at the top, you’ll be treated to a breathtaking panorama of Madeira Island and the neighboring peaks. It takes one hour to drive from Funchal to the hike’s beginning location.

5. Monte Palace Gardens
The hilltop location of Monte Palace Gardens offers a view of Funchal Bay. Take a charming cable car ride to the top of the hill to explore the gardens’ impressive tile collection, unique Asian patterns, rich biodiversity, and fascinating museum.
Originally a stunning mansion from the eighteenth century, the garden was eventually converted into an opulent hotel. José Berardo, a Madeiran businessman, bought the hotel in the 1980s to realize his vision of a tropical public park. The climate of Madeira makes it possible for both native and exotic plants to flourish in a garden.
Wander around the grounds and take in the tile collection set among the lush tropical plants. These tile fragments, which are mostly from the 15th to 20th century, were collected from churches, palaces and private homes.

1. Enjoy the Christmas lights
The Christmas lights display will run from December 1st through January 7th, from 18:00 to 1:00.
There’s no better way to kick off the holiday season than with Funchal’s official light turn on on December 1st.
Static displays, a kid-friendly winter wonderland in the municipal park, cabins offering an abundance of delicacies and live performances by choirs, folklore groups and philharmonic bands abound in the capital.
This year, Praça do Povo and Praia Formosa beaches will host bumper cars, carousels, rides and circus acts, offering enjoyable family entertainment.

2. Savor the Market Nights
Popular events known as “Market Nights” are held in and around each municipality’s local markets, where seasonal goods like flowers, exotic fruits, candies and liqueurs are typically offered.
The most well-known is the Mercado dos Lavradores Market Night in Funchal, which takes place on December 23rd. The market’s surrounding streets are congested with traffic this evening as people take advantage of the chance to socialize, dance, listen to live music and do their last-minute Christmas shopping.

3. Take part in “Missas do Parto”
Nine holy masses, known as the “Missas do Parto” are celebrated in anticipation of Jesus’ birth between December 16 and December 24 at the crack of dawn, usually between five and seven in the morning.
The masses are held in the churchyards, where there are traditional chants and a joyous ambiance. Both the faithful and guests are provided with refreshments. While the “Missas do Parto” are held at all the churches on the island, it’s recommended Sé Catedral, Igreja do Monte and Igreja de São Martinho.

4. Go see the scenes of nativity
The Madeiran people have long treasured the custom of displaying nativity scenes in their homes, churches and public areas. Nativity scenes can be classified as either “em rochinha” or “em escadinha.”
The latter mimics the island’s topography, featuring mountains, valleys, fajãs (flat areas close to the coast) and a cave that is decorated with fruits, houses, churches and nativity figures.
While nativity scenes can be found all over the island, it’s especially suggested visiting the ones at Jardim Municipal, Mercado dos Lavradores and Jardim Botânico.

5. Discover December New Year’s Eve fireworks
The 31st December New Year’s Eve firework display dazzles and excites spectators both domestically and internationally, capping up December and the year in a flood of color, excitement and music.
There will be 61 fireworks posts this year, five on the ocean, 25 on the city’s waterfront and 29 in the Funchal amphitheater. Each post will last eight minutes and include accompanying music.
This year’s new launching locations include the Amparo Garden (Jardim do Amparo), the Ponta Gorda Bathing Complex and the Praia Formosa Promenade and the area north of it. On Porto Santo Island, there will be two posts as well.

Enjoy the most beautiful winter holiday in Madeira with your family and friends, always relying on Madeira Airport Transfer for high quality and easy taxi services, for unforgettable adventures and precious memories!

Porto Santo is one of the two populated islands that make up Madeira, an archipelago in the North Atlantic Ocean, just off the west coast of Africa, famous for its beautiful and enormous golden sandy beach.
Although the island of Porto Santo is only 42.17 km2, it has a lot of beautiful things to offer!

Despite its name, Vila Baleira is Porto Santo’s only town of around 5500 people and it’s adorned with beautiful streets lined with palm trees.
If you decide to visit this place, you cannot miss Christopher Columbus’ former house in Vila Baleira, which represents the island’s main cultural reference.
Casa Museu houses a small museum. Besides several information boards about the history of Porto Santo, with English translations available, you’ll have the chance to see artifacts, maps, navigation instruments and charts from the 16th and 17th centuries.

Considered the highest point in Porto Santo, Pico Facho is 516 metres high. Due to the geographic position of the island and the high altitude,if pirate ships were seen, bonfires (fachos) were made here to warn the rest of the archipelago and the island of Madeira in order to be prepared if an attack was initiated.

Another of Porto Santo’s viewpoints, Pico do Castelo (Castle Peak) is at 437 metres high, where you can take a walk up to the top, admire the gorgeous landscape and breathe the salty ocean air. The views of the island and the ocean will definitely worth the effort.
Although there was never a castle there, the name is due to the fact that it was one of the places where the island’s inhabitants took refuge when pirate attacks ocurred.

Not far, Ana Ferreira Peak is 280 metres (918 feet) high. From here you can see the Facho and Castelo Peaks. You can also admire the basalt columns, probably the most beautiful geological formations on Porto Santo Island.

Before leaving this lovely island, you have to stop at Porto Santo Beach, where you can have a great time, enjoying the sunny weather , swimming and getting tanned. Located 4 km from Vila Baleira, the beach, as the whole of Porto Santo’s sand strip, is reputedly known for its therapeutic effects.

Enjoy the beautiful places of this fascinating island with your family and friends, trying new experiences and creating unforgettable memories!

So you are planning to spend December in Madeira: the complete calendar will help you make up your mind about what things you want to do and which places you are willing to explore.

December 2018 is fast approaching bringing with it the sound of jingle bells and the scent of fir tree. We are all preparing for the celebration of Christ’s Nativity, for a time of family and gift giving.
The Island of the Eternal Spring celebrates Christmas in a unique and purely traditional way. For despite the fact that they are quite away from mainland Portugal, the traditions and customs of the mother country live here and are observed closely. So certainly, the end of this December you are in for an amazing Christmas if you find yourself in Madeira.
So here a few of the highlights of the month to come:
From December 1st to January 6th, when the season’s celebrations are officially over, Christmas lights will bathe Funchal in light. So you might be willing to attend the official switching on of the lights on December 8th, although the locals will be preparing for the jolly season long before this date.
Christmas celebrations in Madeira last for about a week, from December 16th to December 24th. They are of course followed by Christmas with the special mass on the 25th and the family bliss that follows in the next days.
All this while, if you want a Madeira tour or a Funchal airport transfer, you can opt for it by booking online. It is best to make all such travel arrangements online beforehand and this way you can get the best prices and services.
As we approach the end of December, there are other interesting events to occupy our time and attention, but we will mention these in our next article.
