It has not been called “the Island of the Eternal Spring” for no reason. The best time to visit one of the most beloved islands in Europe and the entire world is during spring, when the weather is pleasantly warm, with temperatures rising to 20 degrees Celsius by the end of March and the streets of Funchal are crowded with an explosion of flowers and color.

With spring just knocking on our door, let’s talk about the most exciting March 2015 events in Madeira. The Madeirans really know how to welcome spring, the time they are in their element.

Festa da Anona (or, in translation, the Cherimoya Fruit Festival) is celebrated in Faial, Santana between the 7th and 8th of March. Anona (the actual Cherimoya Fruit) is grown around Faial village, on the northern coast, and is the symbol of sweet fruits that grow on the Island. The Festa da Anona is celebrated with a beautiful exhibition of fruits and local products and with a loud, happy party.

No sooner does the Cherimoya Fruit Festival approach its end then the Madeira Island Open starts. This professional golf tournament is held annually in Santo da Serra. It is scheduled for the period 8-11th of March and offers a thrilling experience and world-class golf courses for all those who wish to participate.

As we approach the end of March and with the weather expected to get warmer and warmer, people are invited to the Madeira Forest and Tree Week starting on March 21st. Taking place in the Ecological park of Funchal, this is also an annual event meant to promote ecology and awareness regarding the importance of promoting nature and forests. In the pure Madeiran style, the event entails workshops, exhibits, contests and activities (tree planting being the most important of them, of course).

To travel in Madeira, you can either book a Madeira transfer or rent a car in Funchal.

Last time, we explored some of the many things to do is Madeira in autumn. We feel there is still much to be said on the subject, so here is a new list of alternatives to scuba diving and sunbathing, as well as a review of the reasons why coming to Madeira in autumn or even in winter should not be ignored.

Many people are actually tempted by the idea of traveling during what is called “the low season”. The advantages are clear: firstly, the prices are much lower. Secondly, the holiday resorts are less crowded. It is also much more relaxing to take a break from work and travel “during the year” instead of waiting for the national holidays.

But coming back to the point, here are our new suggestions of things to do is Madeira in autumn:

A spiritual hour in Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Monte, an 18th century church and famous Madeiran pilgrimage site set in the middle of the unique Monte village.

A visit to the Universo de Memorias Joao Carlos Abreu will mean plunging into a kaleidoscope of recollections and artifacts collected throughout the life and travels of the great writer and politician. This elegant small palace offers a teahouse, an auditorium for lectures and a beautiful garden to explore.

CR7 Museum located on Rua Princesa Dona Maria Amelia, Funchal, Madeira, is a must-see for any football fan. For only 5 EUR, you can explore the history and glory of local football in an innovative way.

Also in the capital city of Madeira Island, Funchal, you will be surprised to see another interesting museum: Casa da Luz (in fact the Electricity Museum). There is plenty to see and do here, and it is an educative place for kids as well!

A last word of advice: you can rent a car to travel freely around the whole island and admire it in all its beauty, even on a slightly cooler day.

They don’t call it “The Island of the Eternal Spring for no reason” – it is a universally acknowledged truth that the weather stays warm in Madeira throughout pretty much the entire year, but it does get a bit colder as we progress towards winter. In the following lines, stay with us as we discover new interesting things to do is Madeira in autumn.

The autonomous island of Madeira is much more than just an exotic destination by the ocean. It combines the fresh breeze of the Atlantic with the thrill of unforgettable landscapes you can enjoy from uphill; it is a land of wonder, where the soft sandy beaches caress the edge of the evergreen Laurisilva forest.

During summer, the most popular activities in Madeia are water sports and endless hiking trips, but let’s also see some things to do is Madeira in autumn:

A night at the… Madeira Mandolin Orchestra will be an unforgettable experience for any music lover. People who have listened to these professional musicians play say the sound of an entire orchestra of mandolins is unique and unforgettable. The location is Caminho Da Sao Roque, in Funchal.

Horseback tours of Madeira and the Laurisilva are popular on the island and they don’t require for the weather to be hot. A quiet autumn ride along the coast or through the forest is quite accessible and definitely enjoyable. Quinta do Riacho is the palce for you. Of course, if you are not the adventurous type, you can opt for a driving tour of Madeira.

One of the oldest and most representative institutions in all Madeiran history, the Jesuits’ College of Funchal (Colegio dos Jesuitas) is another attraction you can visit, even on a rainy day. Founded in 1569, it had many tenants throughout the century before eventually becoming a herald of volunteer work.

A visit to the Frederico de Freitas Museum, where you will enter the fascinating universe of a 17th century home stuffed with porcelain and furniture pieces, Venetian glass and priceless artwork.

And these are just a few of the many options you can explore.
