June, the best month in Madeira

Summer is almost here, so we must decide what we are going to do this June, the best month in Madeira. The Island where spring never leaves… welcomes a mild summer with some of the best events in the calendar.

So let’s see what these great events in Madeira in June 2016 are!

Decidedly, the month of June is marked by the Atlantic Festival scheduled for June 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th 2016. This exciting annual event is all about fireworks. You know, fireworks were invented by the Chinese, but today Madeira becomes the ultimate destination during the New Year’s Eve and during the summer Atlantic Festival. Apart from the fireworks contest, the festival also features the Madeira Music Festival and performances by the local philharmonic in the city center of Funchal.

Machico organizes a Medieval Fair between the 3rd and 5th of June.

If you are into camping and mountaineering, know that there is actually a national Federation dedicated to this activity in Portugal and that they are preparing for the 4th edition of the event called the Ultra Skymarathon Madeira. It is scheduled for July 4th 2016.

The Portuguese are fairly religious people, some being quite traditionalistic in their Catholic beliefs and traditions. Between June 12th and 29th, go to church and then join the fun during the Festa dos Santos Populares, a religious and popular festival dedicated to Santo Antonio, Sao Joao and Sao Pedro.

You already know the Island of Madeira has a penchant for celebrating vegetables and fruits. It’s cherries’ turn in June! Festa da Cereja (or the Cherry Festival) is celebrated every year in Camara de Lobos, namely in Jardim da Serra. This year, it will be held on the 18th and 19th of June. You can taste the huge, tasty Norberto variety and drink a sip of ginjinha, a marvelous beverage made from the Morello cherry variety.

And the Volta a Madeira Classic Rally has been scheduled for June 25th and 26th 2016.
